New Details on the 2021 Bronco Towing Capacity

Tow Tow Tow Your Boat!

For those of you hoping to use your new 2021 Bronco for towing, Ford has released detailed information outlining the towing capabilities of their latest SUV.

As shown in the graph below, both the 2 and 4 door versions are capable of a maximum loaded trailer weight (lbs.) of 3,500 pounds with a max tongue weight of 350 pounds.

Ford derives these calculations for Bronco using an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standard which provides a level playing field. The SAE standard, “Performance Requirements for Determining Tow-Vehicle Gross Combination Weight Rating and Trailer Weight Rating,” is known as J2807.

SAE J2807 requires the manufacturer to use a vehicle equipped with options found on at least 33 percent of the vehicles produced for that model. It also factors in the equivalent of a 150-pound driver and passenger and a full tank of fuel. (link to SAE J2807 page)

Keep in mind maximum towing is only one factor when determining what your Bronco is capable of. The Maximum towing of 3500 lbs assumes no cargo and requires the optional Trailer Tow Package – Option Code 53Q (e.g wire harness & 4-/7-Pin Connector – Hitch Receiver)

Keep in mind the GCWR column in the chart above shows maximum allowable combined weight of vehicle, trailer and cargo (including passengers) for each engine/axle ratio combination. Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight assumes a towing vehicle with any mandatory options, no cargo, tongue load of 10% (conventional trailer) Weight of additional options, passengers, cargo and hitch must be deducted from this weight.

Here is a quick example using a 4 door Big Bend equipped with a 2.7L automatic (10R60) with a 3:73 rear axle:

GCWR 8740 lbs.

Curb Weight      (4883) lbs.

Max Trailer        (3500) lbs.

Remaining         357 lbs.

This means between your cargo and accessories; you would have 357 lbs to work with.

We will have more information to share in the coming week regarding towing. Please jump to the forums to tell us what you’ll be towing with your Bronco!

  1. Well, I was hoping the 4 door with a 2.7 would have more capacity than just 3500 lbs. Seems very unusual to have a max of 3500 lbs regardless of final drive ratio, engine, or wheelbase? Surely the 4 door with a lower drive ratio and the V-6 would be more capable than a 2 door with a 4 cylinder in towing capacity, right?

  2. Billy,
Off road SUVs don’t tow much because they have soft suspension that allows for articulation off road. You will never have a true off roader that can tow significant weight

  3. I have ordered a 4 door Outer banks, however I need to tow a 4000 lb. Travel trailer? I hope I don’t have to cancel and buy another antiquated 4 runner!

    1. How crazy it the top of line 4 door Bronco model can’t have the tow package…ugh. Can someone tell us if the tow package can be installed after delivery of the 4 door FE bronco?
